I watched Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) again recently from on the original VHS tapes. These were the original trilogy tapes that were the "final chance to own Star Wars" before the Special Editions came out. They look pretty fuzzy compared with the new 2004 DVDs.
My 5 ½ year old daughter joined me to watch for her very first time seeing the movie. So I feel good that she got to see the original version at least once. Who knows if she will appreciate it? She asked lots of questions during the movie, like “who’s that?” for all the characters when they first come on screen. Or “What’s that?” for monsters like the bantha, sandpeople, and Ben Kenobi doing his wail to scare the sandpeople. She was scared of the trash compactor monster. And she really didn’t get into the movie or space battles. So I suppose this is a case of “Well, I will watch it because Dad likes it, but I don’t.”
She had one question which I have never really been able to answer. Why does Ben Kenobi disappear after Darth Vader strikes him with the lightsabre? I had to say, “Well, I think I am going to find out in May when the last Star Wars movie comes out."
I really never have understood that myself. I always guessed it was ‘some Force thing’ needed for the movie plot.” I really do not think she got it. But I do not get it either. Why WHY WHY?
He disappears because
