A pretentious dining aquaintance of mine pronounced that olive oil, in which bread was dipped, was called "Italian Butter". Baffled that he could be so ignorant, I told him that in fact Italian butter is a dairy product called "burro" and exactly resembles conventional butter in color, form, and taste. And in fact, Italians consume large quantities of the stuff.
Some cooking show guru had whipped together an olive oil mix heavy with every kind of spice and called it "Italian butter". This recipe can be found all over the Internet.
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried rosemary
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
While tasty, it is not in fact Italian Butter. It is spicy olive oil.
