If you use the the FileNet IDM desktop, it can integrate itself with the Microsoft Office programs so that checkin/checkout will seem to work in harmony with Word and Excel.

The FileNet Word integration consists of the Filenet toolbar (the one with the checkmarks). This toolbar runs the FileNet macros. I do not like to use the Word integration with FileNet.

This solution was originally to enable a user to open a complex document with other clunky macros. The document did not seem to open, it would just sit there.

1.) Exit all running Word programs
2.) Remove the "Normal.Dot" from "C:\Documents and Settings\{ your user ID }\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates". You can rename it or delete it entirely because it will be recreated.
3.) Removing the IDMWORD8.DOT from the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup" directory. (There is another copy of this file in the "C:\Program Files\FileNET\IDM\Sample Code\OfficeIntegration" directory if it needs to be restored.)
    4.) Start Microsoft Word
    5.) Load the file

Here is what I have found:

Norton Antivirus on/off really has no affect with clunky word macros
With FileNet enabled, Setting Tools --> Macro --> Security HIGH will allow you to open the document, but then the macros are not available
In our case, There did not appear to be any macros with the same name between FileNet and the documents
We founf that the document will eventually open anyway with macros and FileNet if you leave it for about 20 minutes.
With the FileNet template removed, the document still takes about 30 seconds to open anyway with the macros.
