How to convert your Windows Server 2003... to a Workstation

    http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/

Turn your Windows NT 5.2 machine into Windows 2003 Pro! These tips make your system appear more like Windows XP Pro (WIndows NT 5.1) and reduce the security settings.

You may well ask "Why would you do such a CRAZY thing?"

I might agree that it is crazy for several reasons:

1.) Cost: Windows XP Home retails for $200.
Windows XP Pro retails at $300
vs. $400 for Windows 2003 Web edition
or $800 for Windows 2003 standard edition.
(Obviously you could find lower prices on all at eBay or OEM resellers)

2.) It's a server! Windows 2003 is overkill for those who want to play games, watch movies, listen to DVDs or use office productivity software.

3.) It's a lot of work to duplicate what Windows XP already gives you.

4.) Most of the changes compromise reliability and security. You are asking for trouble.

OK that being said, this article is still very interesting. Here is why:

1.) Suppose you have a PC used for software development on your desk and you run Windows 2003 server on it. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to run workstation type apps on it too?
2.) Windows 2003 is actually Windows NT 5.2 vs Windows XP which is Windows NT 5.1. It is a more up to date code base.
3.) Windows XP does not support IIS 6.0. If you are developing IIS 6.0 applications it is very handy to have it on your own workstation.
4.) Windows Server 2003 supports more than 2 processors. If you need a high power workstation, this might be the way to go. (CAD/CAM users know what I am talking about.)
