* The first Ford Excursion was actually designed and built in
1951. It was never marketed because the then-current braking
technology required a drum 3 feet wide on each wheel.
In the book Ford Trucks Since 1905 from Crestline publishers, the author talks about many Marmon Herrington conversions.
Marmon-Herrington is still in the business of doing all wheel drive conversions of heavy duty trucks. I would like to try one out, but they are probably quite businesslike.

This is a picture of two 1950 Ford Marmon-Herrington 4x4 truck conversions. The one on the right is the first Ford SUV, the "Ranger", but I couldn't see the 3' brake drum. (hee hee)
Chuck's Trucks is in the business of Ford restoration and has a couple of Marmon-Herrington Ford trucks.
