This e-mail has been passed around the internet recently:
Hi Everyone! My [friend of a friend] works for [company with possible connections] and they put out the following notice to all their employees.
Effective May 1, 2005, telemarketeers will be able to access your cell phones. All calls made to your cell phone will be charged TO YOU. If you do not wish to receive any telemarketing calls,
you can call 1-888-382-1222 (from your cell phone) or you can go online to http://www.donotcall.gov.
It only takes a minute or two to register. Please forward this message.
The cell phone directory warning is the hottest e-mail around, and some forms of it are urban legend. This e-mail is fair advice, but there is more to the story.
A company called QSent has been hired to create a cell phone 411 service. It is strictly voluntary to be listed, unlike plain old telephone service where you must pay to be unlisted. Also, even if you do elect to be listed, the FCC rules are that marketers may not call cell phone numbers with automatic (or as we say in the business, “predictive”) dialers. So any calls to you must be placed by hand from a list.
If you volunteer to be listed in the Qsent 411, you may then want to take advantage of the Do Not Call Federal list. In Minnesota we also have a state list.
