When you load Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.x (6.0.0, 6.0.1 or 6.0.2) on a client PC where adobe acrobat PDF documents are being downloaded from a web server using a content management system such as FileNEt, the PDF document does not display but shows a blank IE window. If you at this point open Adobe Reader, the PDF document you just asked to be opened within IE is instead opening in Acrobat Reader. If you tried to open many documents, they will all be preloaded in adobe acrobat reader.
If Adobe 5.x is loaded on the users workstation, this behavior no longer occurs and the PDF's do open within IE as expected. It also does not occur with Adobe Acrobat 7 on the client PC.
The above mentioned problem will resolve itself if, and only if Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.x is also installed on the Web server itself. It appears there is some new behavior with Adobe Acrobat 6.x that will eventually force a customer to install it on the Web server in order for the OPEN command to properly work. A network trace shows that the correct MIME-type is selected only if it is installed on the Web server. If Adobe Acrobat 6.x is not installed on the Web server and when the original PDF file is served to the browser, it has a Content-type of "application/octet-stream" instead of "application/pdf".
