Scott Adams wrote this in his Dilbert Blog about the elements of humor
Quote:
I wrote on this topic more extensively in my book, The Joy of Work. So I’ll just give you the highlights here. The core of humor is what I call the 2-of-6 rule. In order for something to be funny, you need at least two of the following elements:
Cute (as in kids and animals)
Naughty
Bizarre
Clever
Recognizable (You’ve been there)
Cruel
Here is my favorite Dilbert cartoon. It is the only one I have ever saved. The date on it is 11/9/1995. I ran a check on it, and I think it hits all six.
Cute - Saint Dogbert -
Naughty - enters the land of Cubicles -
Bizarre - searching for Demons of Stupidiy.
Recognizable - Suddenly he finds an over-promoted computer guru spouting useless database concepts ("You'd be fools to ignore the boolean anti-binary least square approach.")
Clever - Dogbert shouts "Look! Actual Code!"
Cruel - Co-worker shouts COOL! as the monster is dispatched to Dark world by the sight of its most feared object.
I have from time to time used white out to substitute the following for "boolean anti-binary least square":
* Corba Application Server
* n-tier business server
* Rational Extreme Application Development
* Voice XML Server
* Push Technology Server
Another good Dilbert

Pointy-Haired Boss: Dilbert, I'd like you to meet Ben, our new fast-track manager.
Dilbert: Hi.
Pointy-Haired Boss: Ben has no real experience but he's very tall, so we know he'll go far.
Ben: I also have executive-style hair.
Pointy-Haired Boss: We think it will turn silver.
LOOK! Actual CODE! -pssshhhh

Saint Dogbert enters the land of cubicles searching for demons of stupidity. Suddenly he finds an over-promoted computer guru spouting useless database concepts. "You'd be fools to ignore the boolean anti-binary least square approach." The monster is dispatched to the dark world by the sight of its most feared object. "Look! Actual Code!" ("Cool!")
I made a large copy to hang on my cube and substituted "CORBA Application Server" over a whited out "boolean anti-binary least square approach." It got laughs for months.
