IBM Thinkpad users have a very cool new utility as part of the ThinkVantage Access Connections software. It works with the internal Intel wireless access card or other Thinkpad supported wireless cards. I went to the IBM Thinkpad Support site and allowed the site to update all my software (bios and all utility programs) via an ActiveX component.
It ended up installing this software as the wireless handler. There is a pretty good utility with graphic display that shows the approximate distance and power of different wireless networks in range. It is a cool RADAR type display. I like this better than NetStumbler.
NetStumbler is a Windows tool that allows you to discover 802.11b (and 802.11a, if using Windows XP) wireless LANs. It includes GPS integration and a simple, intuitive user interface.
Though primarily targeted at owners of wireless LANs, it has been the de facto tool for casual users such as "war drivers" since 2001.
