Visual Studio 2005 can be installed without having Windows XP Service pack 2 installed. You may only have Windows XP SP1 because your company has not yet migrated (like mine).

Aaron Stebner has two good tricks
How to install VS 2005 and MSDN for VS 2005 on XP without SP2
    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/08/25/456611.aspx

Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 will not install on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/06/05/425517.aspx

    Here is an alternate way

    Quote:
    Launch regedit.exe
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
Change the CSDVersion value to be 512 or higher (0x0000200 in hexadecimal)
Close regedit.exe and install Visual Studio 2005
Rerun regedit.exe and change the CSDVersion value back to what it was originally

Note that the .NET Framework 2.0 can be installed on Windows XP Sp1 with no problem. And it can co-exist with Framework 1.1.

If you are looking for your lost installation key for Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2003 look in these places in the registry:

    Visual Studio 2005
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\Registration\

    Visual Studio 2003
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1\Registration\

    Visual Studio .NET (2002)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.0\Registration\

The key name is PIDKEY and contains the 25 character code. When split into five five-letter groups with dashes, this is your installation key.
