Here is how to use Knoppix, a version of Linux that boots from a CD, to back up your Windows files when Windows will not boot. One of the best ways to recover the data is to plug in a USB drive of some sort.
The first step is to boot Knoppix from the CD. See below for links to Knoppix. I like the Damn Small Linux version.
When the desktop loads, you will see at least two hard drive icons on the desktop (one for your hard drive and one for the USB drive).
Click on the hard drive icons to open them up and figure out which drive is which.
Right-click the USB drive icon and choose "Actions > Change read/write mode" so you can write to the drive (it's read-only by default for security reasons).
Now find the files you want to back up and drag and drop them to the USB drive. When you are finished, shut down the system and remove the USB drive.
In Damn Small Linux, there is a drive mount tool in the lower right hand corner. This will show your hard drives. You can use the file manager to copy the files. If your USB drive does not show up, try the unix command from the window
Quote:
` ls /mnt/sd* ` and if there are any partitions, you can manually mount using ` mount /mnt/sdXx `
The Knoppix home page (starts in German, but click the UK/US flag to switch to English)
