At one company I work with, having any sort of free software installed on a company PC is a no-no and automatic audits of the Control Panel install list are done on a periodic basis.

The Add/Remove control panel applet remove tab builds its list by searching this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall for any entries with a DisplayName value. This is the Control Panel "Add/Remove programs" related registry entry.

I find Paint.NET to be a very valuable image editing tool for day to day use. The company disagrees. So, the solution was to copy the installed program to another directory and "uninstall"

I created a new folder in the root of C:\ called "Program Files Not Installed". I copied the Paint.NET folder to Paint.NET2.65. (I cannot install 3.0 since this same company has not come around to installing Windows XP Service pack 2. That is another story!)

I ran the uninstall to remove the original version and installed program entry from the registry.

I created a shortcut in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ folder so that it will appear back on the start menu.

I did have a problem when I tried to print. The wiaaut.dll file was missing. You can download that with the Windows Image Acquisition Library 2.0 (by Microsoft). It is an imaging toolkit for developers.

You can also run Paint.NET from a USB key drive or Network drive or other portable file storage in this manner.
