How do you save a document from the Intranet or Internet and keep the file name that you see before you open the document? Also how do you keep Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat documents from opening in your web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox)?
Most people have Acrobat Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Word configured using the default settings. This means that the PDF documents will open up in their browser window. If you then have the PDF document and try to use Save As, it makes you save it as OpenDocument.pdf. Also, with document results lists you cannot right-click and then do Save Target As.
Microsoft Word behaves differently. The save filename from the Word window will be the link title. Example: OpenDocument.aspx?ID=003701546.doc
Fix for Adobe Acrobat PDF documents
1. Open up Acrobat Reader from your Windows start menu.
2. Click Edit --> Preferences on the menu.
3. Go to Options and un-check the Display PDF in Browser.
Now when you click on the documents, you will be asked: "You are downloading a file xxxx.pdf" from yourserver. Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?
You can open or save with that filename. Also when you open the document, it will be in a separate Adobe Acrobat Reader window. When you save from the Acrobat window, it will keep its proper filename.
Fix for Microsoft Word Documents
1. On your Windows desktop, open "My Computer" or any other Windows explorer.
2. Select Tools --> Folder Options
3. Select the File Types Tab, and then find the "DOC" extension in the list. 4. Click on it when you get there.
5. Click the [Advanced] button to open the Edit File type window
6. Check the "Confirm open after download" box.
7. Then click [OK] to close all the windows.
Now if you click on a document, choose Save, it will have the proper file name.
Note: If you Open the document in Microsoft Word (Instead of Saving), and try to use File --> Save As from Word, it will NOT keep the proper file name. It will still try to use the URL filename.
