    Truman Show, The [23]

    Movie Reviews

    Jim Carrey plays Truman Burbank, the subject of the most elaborate practical joke ever devised. Truman has lived his whole life as the star of a television show, with a complete fictional world of Seaside, Florida built around him. Truman's world has physical boundries, but his mental boundries keep him from ever leaving the world. He has a fear of the sea, so he will never go out on a boat. Road blockages keep him from leaving the island.

    As his name implies, Truman is the only real person in the made up world. Everyone else is fake, and exists only for his benefit. It is the ultimate ego-centric belief. TV cameras show every aspect of his life 24 hours a day. If it were a real TV show, I would imagine it to have full live coverage, a one hour prime time summary, and special graphic scenes with his TV wife, Meryl (Laura Linney). Meryl is a TV actress who agrees to sleep with the main character, perhaps in order to further her career. When does she ever get a break? Is it really worth the money to be "Truman's wife"? The movie seems to shy away from this and hopes you take the high road.

    As Truman starts to figure out that things are not as they seem, you really feel for him. Who doesn't want to break out the mold from which they were cast? The "everything about your world is a lie" follows back to the old "World is Hollow and I have Touched the sky" episode of Star Trek. (This story has its basis in an even older Spaceship world Sci Fi story. Robert Heinlein authored Orphans of the Sky in 1958, which first raised the possibility that the crew might eventually forget they were aboard a ship and believe instead that they were the inhabitants of a small world )

    The real world urbanization looks to be a horrible place around the Seahaven dome sound stage. So TV is portrayed as escapism, but seen more extremely here. (Foolish Truman, he's the envy of the world in there...)

    While The Truman Show movie is technically Science Fiction, it is really the near future and certainly a possibility with current technology. I would have no desire to watch the program, but as with everything else, there is an audience somewhere. Rent the Truman Show DVD or catch it on TV. {BB}

    Truman Show, The [23]

    My Score: 23    [23]

    This show was ahead of its time in 1998 as showing reality TV as the most popular viewing choice before the great Reality TV glut of the 2000's. This glut was brought on by the threat of a writer's strike.
