    How the Grinch Stole Christmas! [24] -1966-

    Movie Reviews

    How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess has been a Christmas season must-see since the first showing in 1966. It, along with the Rankin Bass specials (Especially Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer), and A Charlie Brown Christmas, have become a Christmas tradition. When these programs were first released, they were somewhat unique in that they were presented in color, at a time when most households still had black and white TV sets.

    The animation drawing was an improvement over the original Dr. Suess book. But you can see places where the pencil drawings were not quite cleaned up. The most evident smudges are in the "zoo-zitta car-zay - roller skate type of lacrosse or croquet" sequence. The cels are repeated and you can see where some wholesale erasing was done.

    The dialogue, spoken by Boris Karloff in his disctinctive English accent, lends a certain sophisticated evilness to the Grinch character. The dialog was lifted almost word-for-word from the original book, with additional scriptings to fill out a 22 minute show.

    The other important component to the show are the original songs, like the Whos singing "Welcome Christmas" ("dahoo dorez") and "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch". Thurl Ravenscroft lends his basso profundo voice to that song and really underscores the badness of the Grinch character. Thurl voices many of the rides in the Disneyland park and was an uncredited fixture in many Disney animated movies of the 1960's. Thurl is also the voice of Kellogg's Tony the Tiger "Theeey'rre Grreaat!!". Because Thurl was not credited in the show, many people think that Boris Karloff sings the song.

    The DVD of this movie is available, and can be played any time during the year now. Dr. Suess' book and movie have been enjoyed by multiple generations. Ted Geisel will be known as one of the great American children's authors of all time. {BB}
