    Spider-Man 2 [24]

    Movie Reviews

This is a superior sequel to the first Spiderman movie, with Toby Maguire as Peter Parker. Alfred Molina appears in the role of the villain as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doc Ock. James Franco reprises his role as Harry Osborn, son of Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin defeated in the first movie. William Dafoe even makes an appearance. William sure reminds one a lot like his character Gill in the Finding Nemo movie with the facial scars.

We get a quick recap of the first movie. Then we move on to the second. Peter is dirt poor. Aunt May is also losing the house. So why isn’t Peter living with Aunt May? At least he could combine his meager income with hers and not be blowing it on the rat hole he lives in. Maybe it is too far to go to Columbia and fight crime from the burbs? Maybe he could wash his whites, colors, and costume separately as well instead of going to the Laundromat.

Mary Jane Watson was in love with Peter, but he has no time for her, since he is off saving the world. Mary Jane is a famous actress now. She is dating the astronaut John Jameson (The eventual Man-Wolf from the comics.) Well why not, that stupid YUTZ Parker is just blowing it. He doesn’t even take advantage of the anorexic daughter of his landlord who has been making eyes at him. Crime fighting really does take its toll on a guy.

Doc Ock becomes a bad guy by an experiment gone wrong. The mechanical arms fused to his spine have burnt out their control chip and they have independent thoughts. To me, this was the scariest part of the whole movie. It seemed to me that if Dr. Octavius disobeyed the arms, they would kill him. But that would render them useless. They gave me the creeps.

For a scene featuring fighting on the exterior of a subway train amidst a crowd of skyscrapers, portions of this film were filmed in Chicago, Illinois on the famous elevated "Loop" standing in for New York City's 9th Avenue “El” in Manhattan, torn down in 1940, with routes transferred to underground subway lines. Chicago 'el' trains were made up to appear as 'R'-train cars complete with MTA New York City Subway decals and 'Forest Hills' on their destination board. This seems to be a big problem for New York City purists. My problem was that the El appears to be 5 stories above ground, instead of 1 or 2. And the tracks come to a dead end right at the river. That did not seem to make sense to me. Nevertheless, it was a very dramatic scene where (* Spoiler *? Yea Right!) Spidey saves the train.

Great humor when Aunt May is moving out of her house:
Peter Parker: [Aunt May is moving, and boxes are outside her house] Hey! Where are all my comic books?
May Parker: Oh, those dreadful things? I gave those away.

Also, a little fun when Spidey has to ride the elevator down to the ground floor with another passenger. Being social in a confined space like an elevator or airplace is a great setting for comedy.
Elevator Passenger: [Looks Spider-man up and down] Nice Spidey outfit...
    Spider-Man: [Facing Forward] Thanks.
Elevator Passenger: Where did you get it?
    Spider-Man: I made it... [pause]
    Elevator Passenger: Looks uncomfortable...
Spider-Man: Yeah it's kind of itchy... [pause] It sometimes rides up in the crotch too...

Spiderman creator, Stan Lee, appears as a pedestrian dodging debris (while saving a girl). I think I also spotted him as a black capped seated patron in the 29 minute pizza joint. He makes an appearance in the blooper reel as well.

Christine Estabrook (who plays Mrs. Martha Huber in Desperate Housewives) plays the wife of Mr. Jameson and mother of John Jameson. It’s hard to watch the DVD and not chuckle about her character in the Desperate Housewives show.

One of the spiritual journeys that Peter takes is that if he is not really into being Spider-man, he loses his powers. It is as much mental as it is the physical changes from the radioactive spider bit.

I have been told that it is important to note that the name is “Spider-Man” not “Spiderman”. The dash belongs in the proper name.

    To me, as a movie enthusiast, not a comic book enthusiast, this was a great show. The effects were spectacular and the plot was great. I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it. {BB}
