City of Joy [18]

Patrick Swayze portrays a disillusioned doctor from Texas searching for the meaning of life in the slums of Calcutta, India. After a major adjustment period in which he deals with poverty in every form, he decides to stay and help the City of Joy clinic treat those that otherwise could not afford medical treatment. This movie would be especially interesting to those curious about what conditions Mother Teresa was working in.

This movie could have stood up well without Swayze. A lesser known American actor would have also brought home the performance. It is the residents of Calcutta who steal the show. Note that all the slum dwellers look better fed than the typical street residents one might find in the real Calcutta. Still, for many people, this will be their only view. {BB}
