The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (19)

    Movie Reviews

It is the Legolas and Smaug show! Starring famous actor Orlando Bloom as Legolas, and famous actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug, the greatest of calamities.

Also featuring Martin Freeman as a actor pretending to be Bilbo Baggins. Special guest star Evangaline Lily as an elf maiden whose love for one elf is soon surpassed by the forbidden love of a young dwarf.

It is nice to see Dol Guldur. Gandalf wrestles with Sauron taking shape. The Orcs are hunting the dwarves. The elves are getting invested in the plot too. It would seem that the battle of five armies is the inevitable conclusion of this story, whether we want it or not.

This movie has a tough time staying on the rails.

What is going on with the gold melting plot? One science professor estimates it would take the power of 38 Nimitz class carrier reactors to melt that much gold that fast. Why did Smaug decide to bolt instead of finishing off the dwarves? Was he just going to Laketown to fortify himself with a snack?
