    Jupiter Ascending [20]

    Movie Reviews

    I give it a 20 on the Group29 scale...not because it was a great movie. It was not.

    I liked "Guardians of the Galaxy" much better. That one at least made me laugh. No, I gave it a score of 20 because many parts of it were visually impressive. I did expect the Star Lord to pop out and make an appearance for some reason...it just seemed possible/right at a few key points of the flick.

    I especially liked the way the capital ships entered and emerged from their "portals" or warp jump points. Nice. I also liked the cast for the most part, hard not to like Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, and Eddie Redmayne. Mila Kunis did an OK job of well, looking pretty.

    I found the "DMV" Terry Gilliam scene ridiculous. It was clearly a joke for the under 20 crowd that has never set foot in such a place.

    I also found it really dumb that a 12,000 year old capitalist kingpin would not have a personal shielding device or competent bodyguards...I mean really? You run a pan-galactic business empire for thousands of years, the scion of the most powerful house in the galaxy and you cannot handle your own personal security or that of your refinery on Jupiter? Where were the defenses for that? One guy crashes his ship through the plexi-shield and the whole place collapses...sorry for the spoiler... but it sure was not built with the same tech their ships were made from...IMHO.

    Perhaps it was the millennia and its tedious boredom that dulled concerns for personal safety...or was it conceit? I am going with the latter.

    A fellow reviewer made a comment that made me laugh...the Wachowski brothers seem to like raiding other peoples ideas and reinterpreting them as if they were new...like the scene of the Human capital planet. His comment was "It looks like Trantor meets the Ringworld" which was totally true!

    I like the state of the special effects. With this movie I would say we are comfortably at the point where a Warhammer40k Space Marine movie could be realistically done in real life. I have seen many fan made cosplay attempts that are impressive...I have even seen some of the movie elements from the video game and the CGI movie revolving around Ultramar of the Utlramarines...but they pale with what could be done with a 300 million dollar budget.

    I think we are there. {JB}
