    A ballistic missile submarine heads to sea during the prelude to war in the former Soviet Union. The crew's last information was that international tension is running high and the Russian missiles are in the hands of rebels. The submarine is directed to launch its missiles onto targets in the former Soviet Union, but a partial message creates a controversy over whether they are to continue with the launch or abort. The firing of missiles will either prevent a strike at the US if they are really supposed to launch, or it will start a nuclear war if the partial message was to abort the launch.

    Gene Hackman plays the old-line submarine skipper who's only desire is to follow the last complete order received. Denzel Washington is the executive officer who believes they should not launch without confirmation of their orders. The situation turns into a mutiny and bifurcation of the crew that illustrates the whole right verses wrong issue that somewhat dehumanizes those who serve in the nuclear navy.

    I really enjoyed this film and recommend it to everyone with the following caveat: The cause of the communications confusion comes from a similar wording in the launch and fragmented message. My experience suggests that launch orders and orders to stand down never share similar wording to eliminate this kind of confusion. Don't take that confusing message thing seriously because it was probably created to start the story. Enjoy it as a fun movie. {KC}
