    Mulan [19]

    Movie Reviews

This movie was pure Disney. Right down to the music and animation stylings. I love the style of the cartoon, it integrated well with the characters and the theme of the story. However, the songs needed work. I felt they were too american. And why is Donny Osmond singing for B.D. Wong??? Oh give me a break.

A few really strange casting roles (outside of Osmond's singing). Pat Morita was the voice of the emperor. There must be some justice in having a Japanse actor play the Chinese Emperor. And Harvey Fierstein as Yao - that cracked me up. One of the true gay actors of this time period and what does he voice here? A bully. A macho, crotch-grabbing, grumpy, rice spitting bully. Although the character matures and helps Mulan save the Emperor, its a casting against type that had me in stitches.

Eddie Murphy was hoplessly out classed by the shadow of Robin Williams. Eddie tried, but his hyper-jive talking dragon just detracted from the show more that it provided comic relief. Lastly, Khan the Hun - was wonderful. Full of menece and guile. You really would not want to stand up to this guy. Frank Welker provided just the right amount of sinister and strength to make Khan truely dangerous.

The Mulan story was well told overall. I just felt it could have been done better. We need good strong women roles, whether cartoon or not. Hell there is a real derth of quality movies anyway - which makes the good roles that much harder to find. This is a great video for your collection too. I suspect that the kids will wear out the tape. Check it out if you have not seen it. [AB]
