Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Launch tour - Part I

On February 1st, 2007, I had my first real look at Office 2007 and first real experience with Microsoft Windows Vista. I had the good fortune of sitting next to a person who was taking notes on an Apple PowerBook. The buzz has been that Vista was merely a retread of Apple OSX.

We had a number of case studies and a brief look at the High School of the Future in Philadelphia. I did like the small screen laptops they were using there.
Todd Cione, the General Manager of Microsoft North Central and Chris Capossela Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Business Division Product Management Group both ran the introduction and first general session.
“People Ready Business” was the catchphrase of the day. Software is an amplifier of what people can do in business. In the late 1980’s, my university was already de-emphasizing the Computer Science engineering program by saying that computers will be tools, not the ultimate solutions. What they were saying is that you did not need to major in Comp Sci, just to succeed in business. The CS degree was for those who would be building the next generations of computers and software.
Sidebar gadgets
I could take or leave this. Unless there is a killer gadget, these types of things are not my cup of tea. I have never been a fan of gadgety stuff. This was a big yawner for the Mac guy. I could learn to like an eBay gadget that lets me watch auctions or a sports scores gadget. Push technology was a solution looking for a problem, but they had a lot of neat things with news, stocks, weather and sports. This might be just the deal. The XML tie in might make it good for specific RSS feeds too.
Windows Desktop search
Windows Desktop Search (MS Search) 3.0 is built into Vista. It demos very well and seemed very speedy. My experience has been otherwise in Windows XP.
Microsoft Outlook 2007 requires a download of Windows Desktop Search to enable its instant search capability. Apparently, the MAC Spotlight is not quite as good, as the MAC enthusiast exclaimed, “That’s insane” during this part of the demo.

Alt-tab
The new app switching was very cool in the Aero display. You actually get to see miniature versions of the apps running. You also see a 3D layout of all your windowed applications so you can select the desired one from the pile. (big woooo from the Mac guy).
The Ribbon in Microsoft Office
I have said a lot over the years that everybody thinks that the feature they use the most is the most used feature. Most people only use 10-15% of the Word commands. Word 2003 had over 1,500 and 35 toolbars. The ribbon shows the commands relavant to the work you are currently doing. If you are on a graphic, the graphic commands show. If you are on a table, the table commands show. You don’t need to bring in or remove toolbars manually
