Override the governor on your Club Car public course golf cart
    Transportation: Things that go
At a tournament the other day, a mechanically minded friend showed me a trick he used to make his public course golf cart go faster. It worked well because he was going twice as fast as everyone else was.

Disclaimer: This is at your own risk. Group29.com, Group29 productions and the editors are not liable for golf cart accidents or damage. You are personally responsible if you are reading this far. Modifying you cart will probably get you removed from the course if you are caught. Be discreet. If you start to have problems, undo the change before you get back to the clubhouse.

This does not work on all golf carts. I am not sure exactly what brand and model of cart this is (probably a Club Car). Obviously, the golf cart must be gasoline powered with an accelerator pedal starter.

The driver’s seat usually lifts up for engine maintenance on the carts. Once you have the seat up, you can see the cables for the throttle. The way it works is that as the engine gets up to speed, the governor spins faster and reduces the gas by closing the throttle.

The trick is to keep the governor from engaging and closing off the throttle. What happens is that you are actually propping the throttle wide open so that when the starter engages you take off at full throttle and can keep on accelerating past the governor limit. It can be a bit tricky to drive when it is all or nothing, but the extra bit of speed is nice.

Click here to see a picture of the governor override on a club car.

Insert a golf tee into the throttle body as shown to prop the throttle wide open. A golf tee opens the throttle just enough for extra speed, but in my experience not too much to cause over-revving and damage.
