Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Launch tour - Part II
PCs: All about your desktop and laptop
The second part of the Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Launch tour was lots of pep and high level talks about the new features in Windows Vista, Office and Exchange. Some of these changes are not baby steps, but forklift upgrades. The best example is the voice and mail integration. The systems might exist on the same network, but voice, data, and e-mail IT staff do not always exist on the same wavelength. Following is some of the points that Microsoft is making for 2007 Launch Tour. (See Part I about the Launch Tour 2007)

    1. Unify Business Communications Solution: Single intelligent communications platforms that include all phone and PC systems (vmail, email, IM, etc.) and devices (mobile, PC, phone). Single Inbox for Outlook 2. Empower Teams Through Workspaces Solution: Single holistic environment for problem solving and work. Access to documents, discussions, and calendars. Work from a single pane in the context of team work (Sharepoint, Groove, Workspaces) 3. Connect People Process and Information Solution: A centralized place for enterprise-wide search, access to LOB business information in single place, finding experts and expertise, personalized sites, and the ability to provide self-service access to business processes. (Workflow built into Sharepoint) 4. Enable Work Anywhere Solution: Automate previously inefficient and inaccurate processes. Streamlines the way people collaborate by connecting users, via familiar front-end productivity tools, to backend systems and processes. A unified platform for documenting, analyzing, modeling and automating business processes. Focus on managing process risks by increasing the accuracy and predictability of information. (Windows Mobile, Outlook, Voice Access (as part of Exchange) speech technology to check calendar and email) One important point made during the presentation, “It is easier to find things on the internet than within your business Intranet.” They want to -Find information and improve business insight -Simplify how people work -Help protect and Manage content -Reduce costs and improve security Find information and improve business insight An integration example showed searching across SAP, PeopleSoft, Lotus, and Siebel. The search results showed google style summaries. Searching accress multiple Sharepoint repositories sounds great, since in big companies that pop up all over the place.
Help protect and Manage content Everyone has lots of content. There is now Document management and workflow, with workflow built into the .NET 3.0 as the WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). http://wcf.netfx3.com/ samples http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa663324.aspx portal There is SharePoint integration with rights management that is built into Windows Servers. Reduce costs and improve security At the Launch Tour, the presenter reported that over 6000 laptops were lost in the United States last year. Bitlocker blocks third party data extraction tools. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa906018.aspx (Bit locker on technet) There is also a need for only a single Vista image to roll out to employee PCs. Overall Vista is touted as more secure. In fact, one of the features is that IE7 in protected mode actually allows malware install, but to a sandbox protected area. I do not understand what the advantage is here, besides the fact that it does not go into your actual system.
