I hated hated hated hated this audio book! - The Society by Michael Palmer
    Our favorite stories and authors
I was given my first audio book on CD as a gift. I like to read, and prefer to listen to the radio on my commute. I rarely listen to my record collection any more as I prefer silence. I got a copy of The Society, by Michael Palmer, read by J. Charles. As soon as it started, I hated the story. I hated the narrator. I hated the protagonist, Doctor Will Grant. That schmuck has the nerve to be the face of the Hippocrates society and represent the doctors against “Big HMOs”. Augh. This is so 1980s with the anti managed care message.

Every chapter, I found myself exclaiming something aloud to express my disgust with the plot and character development. The most egregious plot hole is how Grant and detective Patty Moriarity become lovers. You lost me there Mr. Palmer. Also, J. Charles does not have a convincing voice repertoire. I suspected I could probably do better myself. Not one single character in this audio book, set in Boston, has a recognizable Boston or Northeastern accent.

If you are reading this, and have not read the book, save yourself the trouble. The Hippocrates society scores a deathblow to managed care and restores freedom for doctors and health care professionals everywhere. And the Prince and Princess ride off into the sunset, or at least Chicago.

Oh yeah, the character I guessed to be the “managed care killer” actually turns out to be the assassin of a co-conspirator of the managed care killer, all because she had to go through chemotherapy and an unnecessary breast cancer operation. You go girl!

I finally came around to the idea that audio books were OK with my second audio book, when I borrowed the Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix audio CDs narrated by Jim Dale. Apparently he holds the world record for voices in this particular audio book at 134. Perhaps I have heard the best and worst, and should just skip any other audio books.
