Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Launch tour - Part VI
|
|
|
n the next session, we covered some of the new
features that Vista application programmers
will use. This is the final part in what turned out to be a six part series on
the Windows Vista Launch Tour 2007.
Windows Vista – Next Step for Vista applications
Of course we got the lowdown on Clear, Connected, and Confident the three Cs of Windows Vista.
Clear (Windows Presentation) This is the new Vista UI. Most of these features, except for Rich Preview have been covered exhaustively elsewhere.
- Aero - Windows Flip and Flip 3D
- Sidebar – Gadgets like the clock and weather through XML
- DirectX 10 - the new Graphics API
- Desktop Search - this is already one of my favorite features of Vista
- Virtual Folders - Virtual folders are actually XML files that are database queries that turn into a presentable format that acts exactly like a normal folder in Windows Vista. Virtual folders store Desktop search results.
- Rich Preview - with Windows Vista Rich Preview, you can create your own plugins for special documents Windows Vista comes with a “Rich Preview” and you can create your own plug-ins for special documents.
Connected (Windows Communication)
- People near me (invite people to join a meeting place and collaborate, very useful on portable computers)
- Meeting place (Meeting Space according to Microsoft documentation), you can set up a peer to peer wireless LAN for hotel lobby collaboration meetings.
- Search - I cannot complement this one enough
- RSS on Outlook 2007 and Internet Explorer 2007 (I prefer GreatNews though)
- Sync Center (Sync mobile phone or device)
Confident (Windows Security)
- Windows Cardspace, organize passwords more securely for the web. When a CardSpace-enabled application or website wishes to obtain personal information about the user, the application or website demands a particular set of claims or a particular token type from the user. CardSpace then launches on the desktop, locking the display to the CardSpace program representing the stored identities as virtual information cards. The user selects the card to use and the CardSpace software contacts the issuer of the identity to obtain a digitally signed XML token that contains the requested information.
- Security
- Cryptography
- Error Reporting
- Event logging
Our first development tips
- Developers: Leave User Account Control (UAC) on so that you can relate to your user experience. Do not run as admin!
- Even ISVs can utilize the new application error reporting
- You should be able to create New Vista UI applications that are a joy to use (The Joy of computing) making it less likely that users will criticize applications.
- There is integration UI support for Media and Documents, and you can plug in your own viewers
- Windows Vista utilizes the underutilized graphics processor 2d, 3d, media animation, so graphics intensive applications should not bog down the processing as much as might be expected in a Windows XP or previous environment.
WPF: Windows presentation foundation Book Charles Petzold MS Press (Applications = Code + Markup: A Guide to the Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation (Pro - Developer) (Hardcover))
XAML UI definition language (Presenter Joke here: XML is a solution looking for a problem [AMEN!]) These three bullet points were on the slide, and I am not sure I grasped the significance:
- Hardware Unified framework with incremental learning curve
- Tool-able persistence format
- Flexible deployment model

XAML tool is what designs the look and feel. XAML can be taken into the development tool. Now in Beta Expression designer from Microsoft interfaces with Visual Studio 2005 ZAM 3D – Electric Rain Aurora - Mobiform
WCF Windows Communications Foundation
- Peernet P2P discovery (related to meeting space?_
- WF: Workflow, which is the basis of SharePoint and BizTalk workflow. Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 requires the .NET 3.0 Framework.
- Unified communications stack (Whoo hoo!)
- Search and Organize: Desktop search, Search common controls
- Smart mobility laptops and tablets
- Security and Identity
- CardSpace: user controlled identity WCF
- UAC (User account control) do not use local admin
Note about terms used by the presenter: / = “slide” not slash = (whack), which if I were going to pick a character to resemble a slide, it would be this one. It follows the flow.
I call them the forward slash and back slash respectively. I also use the terms pipe and bar interchangeably, and I know the difference between brackets and braces.
MS Office system Write apps at the next level “Random” Access Apps Access is an easy tool to develop workgroup apps Rich application development Office 2007 Gartner : Whoohoo Josh Greenbaum: WhooHooo hoo ZDNet Open office are struggling to hit this target. (I noted that React OS, an open source Win32 project, have shifted their target too. They were aiming at Windows NT, but now have advanced to Windows 2003 and XP without having a firm grasp on the Win32 compatibility that has even been a part of Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.5)
Visual Studio 2005 tools for the MS office system Good but not great in VS 2005. Will be in Orcas (VS 9.0) in the fall of 2007 Demo Andy Schwarz Magenic technologies MS Office Sharepoint web Portal Fabrikam Workflow designer in US Tools for 2007 MS Office
