College football 2007 Week 1 Analysis

Obviously, the big story is Appalachian State over Michigan at Michigan Stadium. Apparently I am not the only one who thinks that the Appalachian state mascot (Dan'l Boone Yoseff from Appalachian) looks like Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Whether the Wolverines decided that 109,218 were not enough people to play in front of, or whether they really thought that the Mountaineers were not worthy an opponent, they clearly underestimated their opponent. I predict this will motivate Michigan like they have never been motivated before. I would hate to be their next opponent, the Oregon Ducks. In the meantime, you can enjoy the MGOBLOG (Crying like little girls since September 1, 2007). Also yesterday, they featured a “Kittens R Nice” pink theme (omg sooooo cute!). I also foresee the Maize and Blue kittens beating Ohio State, and possibly winning the Rose Bowl.
Also in the Big Ten, Minnesota found itself down 24-0 to Bowling Green at home at the half. Somehow they rallied to go into overtime. But the Gophers ended up losing 32-31. This is not an auspicious start for new coach Tim Brewster.
Notre Dame fell down against Georgia Tech, losing 33-3. Football pundits are predicting they may not win until the Navy game. Even that is not a gimme. Last year at the UCLA game, the band was playing the 1812 overture so the crowd could make their traditional salute to the coach, in this case a letter W formed by thumbs and forefingers to honor Charlie Weis. Near the end of the game there was a lot of complaining by Notre Dame fans about Weis. Also, minutes before the end there were only a handful of W signs near the end of the game. The Irish fans did not stop complaining until the Irish pulled out a last minute win against the Bruin prevent defense. (Quinn, under pressure all day by a relentless UCLA defense, completed three straight passes in the final 62 seconds, capped by a 45-yard TD pass to Samardzija, to lead the Irish to a 20-17 come-from-behind victory.) That probably saved the job for Charlie Weis, but not this year. I bet they wish they could have Tyrone Willingham back. (*cough* Gerry *cough* Faust *cough*)
The best game overall had to be the Tennessee Volunteers at the California Golden Bears. It was a great day to cover Memorial Stadium in High Definition. I assume that Michelle Tafoya took a few hits while sitting with the hippies on Tightwad hill. I did not really see here much for the rest of the game. Tennessee did not hold up their part of the bargain for mouthy coach Les Miles of LSU. This sure looked like a bowl game. Neither team gave anything away. I am going to like Saturday night football on ABC. Although fours hours is a very long game as I pointed out in my article about the 2006 UCLA at Notre Dame game.
