College Football 2007 Week 8 Analysis
|
|
|
Some of the high flying teams around the country are just now discovering the main course of their sumptuous college football schedules. As mentioned before, TWELVE WEEK SCHEDULE. When the dust has settled a few teams might not be looking so good. Injuries have taken their toll on many teams. OK Raise your hands all those that thought South Florida was going to finish undefeated. Uh huh. Right. Thought so.
In the Big Ten, Michigan pulled out against Illinois. But to be fair, the Illini are just righting the ship again after some really bad years. Minnesota should be a freebie for Michigan. But Appalachian state was oh so long ago and the Golden Gophers are fuming after losing to North Dakota State at the Metrodome. Who knows what could happen. The Gophers are not to many mistakes away from 6-2 instead of 1-7. I give Tim Brewster a free pass so far. Collge football fans will forget the loss to NDSU in this season of wild upsets. Michigan is up against Michigan State and Wisconsin. Win out and maybe they are for real. Ohio State had two real tests against Purdue and then Michigan State this week, which they both passed. I do not figure them to come away from Penn State, Wisconsin and Illinois without at least one loss. Until Ohio State or Michigan lose, they pretty much own the inside track to the Rose Bowl.
Oregon should have beaten Cal. One stinkin touchdown. That is all they needed. The Ducks could still go the BCS, but the polls have been unkind to the PAC-10 unless you have USC in your name. Particularly, the Ducks have been burnt in the BCS placement. This USC – Oregon game coming up will be a big one for the PAC-10. Cal is still in the race after losing to UCLA. EDSBS has called Karl Dorrell the Fidel Castro of college football coaches. He keeps avoiding the assassination attempts. The Bruin Nationalistas were hoping that he would finally be done it and they could spend the rest of the season applying the coup de grace. They are absolutely apoplectic over the win over Cal. Even the LA Times columnist T.J. Simers is milking some humor out of their plight. However, all past experiences point to a meltdown at Washington State or Arizona. Then they will get their wish. Arizona State has rolled up to 7-0 and a very rewarding BCS placement. But now they get all the big shooters, Cal, at Oregon, at UCLA, and then USC. They are not going to put 40 points on Cal. Last week I had wondered if Charlie Weis might pull out the green jerseys for Notre Dame just to get something out of the season against USC. They actually did! The Green Jerseys were a one time shot as far as I am concerned. In recent history, they are getting a kind of Chicago cubs billy goat curse/Boston Red Sox Babe Ruth curse on them.
Boston College also has a nice cushy number two ranking. They will have a tough time holding onto that at Virginia Tech. Then comes Florida State and a visit to Maryland. Oh and Hello Clemson! Virginia has time to catch a breath before the finale against Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers could end up looking good in a couple of weeks.
Kansas, meet the rest of the Big Twelve. Big Twelve, what do we think of Kansas? Soooome Schmidt!
After losing to UNLV, the Utah runnin Utes are on track, and the expectations are for them to run the rest of the table in the Mountain West conference. This might not let them win out though as BYU has yet to lose there.
Did anyone notice that Miami defeated Florida State 37-29 this weekend? This is somewhat of an afterthought to what was a huge rivalry in the 80s and 90s.
