Wasp class amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard
    Transportation: Things that go
I was recently in San Diego on Coranado Island. I happened to look across the bay to the 32nd street wharf and saw the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) a Wasp class light carrier/Amphibious assault ship in port. It was berthed next to a similar Amphibious assualt carrier, which I assumed to be the U.S.S. Boxer (LHD-4) but could also have been the Tarawa, Bellaeu Wood, or Peleliu, which are Tarawa class Amphibious assault ships that have San Diego as their home port.

The Bonhomme Richard and other Wasp class ships are based upon the Tarawa class ships. The Tarawa class was designed based upon all the lessons learned in the Pacific Island hopping campaign of World War II. They contain landing craft, helicopters, AV-8 Harrier VTOL planes and detachments of Marines. These are incredible war machines.

The home page for the Bonhomme Richard has a cool National Geographic style foldout showing the capabilities of these incredible ships.
