LSU, UCLA, Florida and George Mason in 2006 Final Four
    The Sport of Basketball
All the number one seeds dropped out, including the two from the prestigious Big East conference. In LSU, UCLA, Florida and George Mason, we have a four, two, three, and eleven seed respectively. UCLA has 11 National Championships under its belt, but none in this decade. None of the other schools has won an NCAA basketball championship. In the previous look at the CBS high definition coverage, I mentioned that defense will be the key to this year’s championship. There is no doubt now in my mind that stifling defense will be the order of the day. It may not make for exciting basketball, but in the end a team will still be a champion.

Well, fans of the ACC, Big East and especially the Big Ten - it is time to stop the whining. The press buzz for a week after selection Sunday was how the ACC got only four bids, the six teams from the Big Ten all got seeded too low, and the Big East got ONLY eight teams. Many jumped on the Billy Packer bandwagon about George Mason getting an at-large instead of Cincinnati. There were notable exceptions, like Yahoo! Sports Dan Wetzel, who had some very insightful columns these last two weeks in his Monitoring the Madness articles. (How many people in the world are paid to get drunk at a bar and watch college basketball?)

The Big Ten was 0 for 6 in getting their teams to the Sweet Sixteen, despite the selection committee handing them generous match-ups. ACC fans were appalled that four teams were selected from the MVC, but those four teams fared better than the four from the ACC, despite being saddled with poor seeding and tougher match-ups. Maybe it is time to for the press to give the mid-majors and West coast teams their due respect. The SEC certainly deserves the respect too.

The sports call-in shows are still saying that Connecticut is the better team. And in a seven game playoff, the Huskies would have prevailed. The buzz is that Connecticut wins the game against George Mason 8-9 times out of 10. No one ever thinks to speak the converse, that a lower seed would beat a higher seed 1 out of 10 times. It sounds like sour grapes either way. The better team at that particular moment won the game, which is the case in every single match up. George Mason gained a surprising advantage by launching to the Final Four 20 miles from their campus.

UCLA also had crowd support which tipped the balance in their favor and turned the Western (Oakland) Regional Final into a home game. You can be sure that they will be working on Free throws. The Bruins have come powering through the PAC-10 at the end by winning the conference regular season and then winning the PAC-10 basketball tournament. There are no such things as “good” losses. Florida went on a 22-1 run against LSU in the last 35 seconds of the SEC semifinals to beat the Tigers 81-64. Florida won the SEC tournament. I give them more momentum than LSU. I see a Bruin/Gator championship game.

I would not want to mess with this guy. He has tapeworms in his stomach and he is very hungry. The tapeworms made him start foaming at the mouth after LSU defeated Texas. CBS might be in a bit of trouble since he let fly with the Mother-F-en-heimer (rhymes with smother ducker).
