UCLA vs Notre Dame 2006 college football preview
    Sports: Athletic Contests
The UCLA Bruins have a college football matchup at Notre Dame Stadium with the Fighting Irish on Saturday October 21st. It does not look good for the Bruins. Notre Dame has one loss to Michigan. UCLA has two road losses, Washington and Oregon.

The Bruins are struggling on offense, having lost supposed star Ben Olsen for 4 to 6 weeks. According to the Daily Breeze, An MRI revealed Olson will not need surgery on his left knee, but he does have a tear in the medial collateral ligament. The injury can heal with rest and rehabilitation, but he likely will be out four to six weeks. UCLA is 4-2, having lost to the Washington Huskies and Oregon Ducks. They have beaten Utah, Rice, Stanford, and Arizona. Notre Dame is 5-1 having beaten Georgia Tech, Penn State, Michigan State, Purdue and Stanford. They lost to Michigan. Brady Quinn, the QB of Notre Dame could be poised to win the Heisman Trophy. However, that loss to Michigan may be very costly. A win over USC could shore up his hopes. Common opponent wins over Stanford tell us very little. Both UCLA and Notre Dame hung 31 points on the Cardinal. But UCLA's defense shut them out.

UCLA and Notre Dame have very little history. This matchup was coming together where two African American coaches, Karl Dorrell of UCLA and Ty Willingham formerly of Notre Dame would go head-to-head in a national spotlight game. Willingham, the first black coach in any sport at Notre Dame, was fired at the end of 2004 and went to the University of Washington. The big moment has already passed (twice) and Dorrell and Willingham are 1-1 against each other. Notre Dame and UCLA had a series in 1963 and 1964. Notre Dame won both contests 27-12 and 24-0 respectively. The magic of the coaching matchup of Charlie Weis vs Karl Dorrell is just not there.

Notre Dame has a major rivalry with UCLA crosstown rival USC. So now there is a three-way competition going. In the end, UCLA is struggling; USC and Notre Dame are still national powers. UCLA may end up just being a common victory for the Trojans and Irish.

UCLA and Notre Dame have a basketball history. Digger Phelps made a career out of one Notre Dame win over a UCLA team, breaking an eighty-eight game winning streak. Those John Wooden coached UCLA teams won back-to-back national championships in 1972 and 1973 with back-to-back undefeated seasons. Quite frankly, it should be an embarrasment to have that as the highlight of your program. Karl Dorrell should be similarily embarrased if this were the only quality win he might notch in his career at UCLA.

Dorrell's star is waning in Los Angeles. He needs a victory over Pete Carroll's USC team to save his career. As a player he is featured in a highlight from November 1986 when he caught a pass from Matt Stevens at the end of the first half of the UCLA - USC game to make the score UCLA 31, USC 0. The sports headline in the Los Angeles Times the next day read "Hail Mary, and in your face." A victory over the Irish would be good, but bragging rights in Los Angeles is what it is all about. A minor consolation might come by defeating the Irish and having Notre Dame beat USC later.

Prognostication: UCLA struggles in South Bend with backup quarterback Joe Cowan at the helm. Irish 21 UCLA 9.
