The Los Angeles Commute

Driving in Los Angeles has been a struggle since the 1970s and the boom of the outlying suburbs.
During the 1984 Olympics, people made a point of being away from the venues unless they absolutely had to do business. Also, the primary venues were around UCLA and USC, which were closed for the summer.
The Red car system was good where there was dedicated right of way,
places where the Blue line runs today and the exposition line may run.
But street running of the red line was extremely dangerous and rightly
so buses replaced trolley cars and helped keep traffic moving. People
think there was a vast conspiricy with GM and the gas and tire
companies. But the fact is that curb boarding buses are a huge
technological and safety advantage to trolleys running in the middle of
the street. Trolleybuses, the best of both worlds like those found in
the Bay area are seen actually less desireable because of the perceived
clutter of overhead wires.
The Green line is so close to fulfilling an airport feeder line role.
The Red line is so close to serving the dense areas of the west side.
Commuter rail has made downtown visits possible for many far
suburbanites who fled in the 1970s. LA could never build freeways fast
enough, and now the city cannot build transitways fast enough. If we
are smart, we will have dedicated right of way for express commuters in
car pools, buses and trains.
At this stage, single commuters have reached the limit where buying
closer in or leaving is the only option. We cannot continue to make
wider freeways. Los Angeles is more densely populated than people
realize. Politicians have been listening to the far flung commuters
long enough. It is time to listen to the people that live near where
they work and want to live in the city.
