NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament 2007 CBS-TV coverage in High Definition
    The Sport of Basketball
Well, some of the NCAA tournament fun is over for the HDTV crowd. On one hand, all CBS NCAA Tournament games will be in High Definition. On the other hand there will no longer be separate games delivered to the local affiliates for HD and regular TV broadcast as there had been for 2005 and 2006.

Unlike last season, CBS will show every Tournament game in HDTV. The advantage is that every game will be in HDTV. The disadvantage is that stations no longer have the option, as they did last season, to show different games on standard-def and HD channels.

For example, any game assigned to KHOU (Channel 11) will air on both its standard def and its HD channel.

There may, however, be an occasional wrinkle for HD purists. Texas or Texas A&M games will be "constant" games for the Houston market. HD programs, however, will be "flex" games, which means they can be switched to another location at CBS' discretion.

What I take this to mean is that the possibility exists for the HD band broadcast to show a game outside the local game if the local one stinks, or if another game is more exciting.

March Madness on Demand is free again, and CBS has pumped up the bandwidth.

However it will be capped at 300,000 viewers at any one time, so you may have to wait until someone else goes offline. Last year it was capped at 175,000 and I was able to watch the UCLA / Belmont game. (As predicted, the Bruins prevailed.)

The 2007 field looks strong. As reported, UCLA finished out the PAC-10 champion, but fell down right after that against Washington and California. This got them a #2 seed vs a #1. It would seem that it is all academic as a #2 vs #1 since after the first round nothing is assured. The Bruins still get to ride out the West in California, as has been pointed out in numerous publications. As with last year, many reporters like UCLA to reach the final four. There is no love for the rest of the PAC-10. I foresee a PAC-10 team in the final four, but maybe not UCLA. Washington State and Oregon are both much better than some realize. Neither garnered any comments during the selection show. Stanford probably should not have been invited over Drexel. But the same thing is said every year: Strength of Schedule.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports is again covering the opening round games from a bar near Detroit. What a great job. You can follow his blog, which is updated every 20 minutes or so.

I like Dan's coverage of the NCAA tournament. He and I are miles apart on the College football playoff. I happen to like the Rose Bowl just the way it is, thank you very much. I also don't care for his hating on Jim Delaney, the commissioner of the Big Ten conference. A vacation to a cold weather state with a domed stadium for a football playoff game loses out to a warm weather state bowl game. The appeal of the Rose Bowl is obvious. I can leave the midwest behind for a week and bask in the warm sun of Southern California. The Tournament of Roses committee has built a great thing. The Rose Bowl is by far, the finest Bowl game to attend, regardless of the level of the teams. Until the football playoff wonks can figure out how to build that kind of pageantry into the NCAA Division I playoff tournament, stick with the current bowl game scenario.

If my bracket still looks good, then so does the bracket for everyone else. I still have 11 in the sweet sixteen and 7 of my elite eight are still alive.

Florida looks strong. Georgetown looks strong. The press all fell for the strong freshman (Durant) ergo strong team (Texas) fallacy. It is all about the teams. Carmelo Anthony had a very strong Syracuse team playing with him in his National Championship win. Texas needs more of everything. I really thought Washington State would outlast Vanderbilt, especially in Double overtime. But Vandy took advantage of some rookie mistakes at the end by the Cougars. The Commodores are not to be overlooked. And what pathos! The Kentucky Wildcats are out and Vanderbilt is still alive. Tennessee is still alive too. Only North Carolina is left for the ACC and only #1 ranked Ohio State is left for the Big Ten. The buzz is that the PAC ten is strong and the Big Ten and ACC are weak this year. There are still fifteen games left to be played.

Unless the flu strikes the UCLA Bruins, there is no way they lose to Pitt. Ben Howland is personally way too competetive to allow that to happen. The Bruins may lose the game to the Kansas/Southern Illinois winner as part of the cost of beating Pitt. Southern Illinois has the power to beat Kansas.

All bets are off on the East region. Oregon should defeat UNLV, but may or may not have the power to beat Florida.

Stanford should not have been invited. And I am not saying Drexel should have been in, or Syracuse for that matter. Louisville should have been given a bye. The last teams in should be the first out.
