Florida and USC pulled out some power wins to establish their opening bids for the BCS championship to counter the LSU Tiger offering from last week. USC is going to send all eleven of their running backs on opposing teams, and will not need John David Booty to throw. Michigan has proven that they are not chumps, but Notre Dame are chumps. Navy are licking their chops already. In 119 years of football, Notre Dame has four or more losses 23 times. Let it be known that the most losses in one season for the Irish is 8 in 1956 under Terry Brennan and 1960 under Joe Kuharich. Charlie Weis is going to be run out of town on a rail, the question is when.
The Big ten is shaking out like it ordinarily does, with the notable exception of Michigan at the bottom. A number of teams have high hopes near the beginning, but will fall as the season goes on. The hunt is still on, and Michigan will not be a patsy. I will be very surprised if a big ten team emerges undefeated at this stage.
In the PAC-10, UCLA and Washington will square off to determine a middle of the conference placement. UCLA bit the dust in Utah in a very inconsistent loss. The critics have been on Bruin coach Karl Dorrell for this very thing. Fans are left wondering, How does this happen? Washington did not come up with the win against Ohio State, so they will be settling the rest of the season. Oregon and Cal look promising, that game will be in two weeks.
Georgia Tech, whom I still consider strong, lost to Boston College at home. B.C. Quarterback Matt Ryan showed some major stuff on Saturday against the Yellowjackets. The state of North Carolina, in basketball a powerhouse, in football not so much. All four teams are heading for the basement with the Clemson/BC tornado approaching.
Alabama gets a good win over Arkansas. The Tide should would like to rejoin football royalty.
Conference play starts in earnest next week. I am still not buying into the ESPN separation Saturday promotion. Separation happens every Saturday. It is like watching a two month March Madness.
