Some reasons we gave up Lotus Notes in favor of Outlook
|

One our very large (Fortune 500) customers just transitioned to Outlook 2003 from Lotus Notes 6.5 as an e-mail calendaring application. This is a significant development, since Outlook/Exchange is not really a groupware collaboration tool like Lotus Notes. Lotus Notes is a database tool that has advanced e-mail functionality. But, because of acquisitions, the corporation has discovered that as an e-mail and calendar tool, Outlook beats Lotus Notes. The company will still have both because there are a number of Lotus Notes databases that will never go away.

Meetings and the Calendar.
Once you get a meeting notice, it is maintained in your own personal calendar. You need so save the notices you get, OTHERWISE YOU LOSE THE CALENDAR ENTRY! Similarly, rescheduling is a real nightmare. Also, if you inadvertently click "Respond" on a meeting information notice, you CANNOT CLOSE IT! When you open a meeting notice, and then accidentally click Request Information, you CANNOT CLOSE IT. You are forced to send the request unless you crash out of Notes.
If you are the meeting organizer and your disk gets rebuilt, you lose all your meetings even if you get your other mail folders back! Then you have to reschedule. Unfortunately, all your original attendees still have their local calendar entries! Now you will end up either double booking if you remember. Or you will see your attendees time blocked out where you had scheduled the meeting.
Sent items and copying messages from folders
You cannot move sent items around to other folders and preserve them like mail messages. Why must I treat my own mail messages differently from any other? When mail messages are copied from one folder to another, the message itself is not copied; Notes creates a "reference" to the message. If you delete the reference, Notes will ACTUALLY DELETE THE MESSAGE! Also, deleting the message will cause all references to it to also be deleted.
Integration with SharePoint
This very big company is a big time user of Windows SharePoint Services (WSS). WSS is like getting a free kitten, pretty soon you have to start caring and feeding. SharePoint integrates nicely with outlook address books and Office Communicator. You can see who is on line and also select from Address books when adding users. It sure beats doing it manually!
Replying
Reply with or without history? Who cares! Do not give me any more buttons. Let me click Reply or Reply to all and then chop what I want or do not want. I find that excluding the context of a message but leaving the subject to be irrelevant to a discussion. Lotus Notes builds from the top down and puts a lot of information in the header between messages that formats poorly on other e-mail clients.
