College Football 2007 Week 4 Analysis
Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame fell down with the ball giving Michigan State great field position. In the end, the Spartans put Notre Dame down to 4-0. This game is a long way away from the 1966 10-10 tie in one of the Games of the Century.
UCLA redeemed themselves by beating the Washington Huskies. In the only meeting of Black head coaches, A Karl Dorrel team beat a Tyrone Willingham team. One might not think this is significant especially considering Super Bowl XLI in 2007, but Eugene Marshall, president of the Black Coaches Association made sure he was on hand for this only college matchup of the season. Utah showed just how much their 44-6 UCLA upset last week motivated them by losing to Nevada Las Vegas 0-27.
So far, no team has that signature win against another proven team to show that they are one of the best teams in college football. The USC win at Nebraska might have been that, but the Huskers barely beat Ball State. Ohio State beating up on Northwestern 58-7 does not yet qualify the Buckeyes as a powerhouse. A 12 game season is much different and less intense than I would have thought. We had eleven game seasons since at least 1970. LSU won a game against South Carolina, but like I said, no one has really emerged. There is a lot of football left to be played.
Appalachian State lost, so some of the luster has come off their season. Michigan beat Penn State to show that they could still win the Big Ten. Wisconsin settled the matter with Iowa 17-13 about who moves on next in the Big Ten race. Purdue takes on Notre Dame this weekend and will probably make them 0-5 in advance of the UCLA / Notre Dame matchup at the Rose Bowl the following week. After that, the Ohio State Buckeyes come to West Lafayette to play Purdue. This might be the ESPN separation Saturday matchup. In my mind, every Saturday is Separation Saturday. Maybe Every Day Should be Saturday.
One of the biggest matchups in the Pac Ten comes this weekend with Cal at Oregon. Essentially, the winner faces USC for the Pac Ten championship. Washington and UCLA are dark horses in the race there. USC should prevail, but again -twelve game season-.
In the SEC, Florida gets a test against Auburn, then in two weeks, the BIG one. Florida at LSU. How Big? This is the BIG BIG ONE. It will not decide any SEC standings, since Florida is in the East and LSU is in the West. But it will decide the national rankings. It also could be the preview of the SEC championship. The SEC championship actually removed some of the excitement of this game. Yea, they are #2 vs #4, but really, it is like a non-conference game. In the end, they would re-match in the championship and THAT game will decide who gets the BCS bid. The only difference is that it may also decide who does NOT get a BCS bid.
