3M Bookshelf Games - Aquire
|
|
|
Back in the 1960s, the 3M company delved into the game business. It was seen as somewhat of a exercise in vanity. But at the time, 3M was experiencing huge growth due to all of its consumer products businesses. Scotch tape was a household word.
The Minnesota based company created a 3M Games Division as something of an executive vanity. 3M Employees were given some as gifts, and allowed to purchase others. Each 3M Bookshelf game was packaged in a unique full color decorated cardboard slipcase.
The packaging distinguished these games from the typical family parlor games. These were seen as games that could be displayed openly along with the classic books and encyclopedias in the family den. They did not need to be hidden away in a cabinet like the Parker Brothers board games in their flat boxes.
One of the most popular of these 3M bookshelf games was Aquire, designed by Sid Sackson. Here is a link to a Sid Sackson fan site.

One Aquire fan has written an IBM PC DOS version of the Aquire game in QBASIC that can be downloaded from that site.
Here is some more information on QBASIC, the language that shipped with the original MS-DOS.

There is an "abandonware" site on the web called "The Underdogs". It is a source of commercial games that are no longer available, but still fun to play. http://www.the-underdogs.org/
There is a Computer Acquire available there
Here is another site called Board Game Geek, with information about Acquire. Board Game Geek About Acquire
Eventually 3M spun off the games division to Avalon Hill.
