The filmsite.org web site has probably the best description of "Film Noir" (literally Film Black) on the web.

I recently had a chance to see Out Of the Past, the archtypical Film Noir. I gave it a favorable review. The cigarette smoking is a plot entity unto itself. I certainly would like to see the Saturday Night Live Parody from the 1987-1988 season, starring Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer.

James Ursini, UCLA Film school graduate (Doctorate) and authority on the subject of Film Noir performs the voice over commentary for the newly released DVD. I highly recommend listening to it for the finer points of Film Noir.

Roger Ebert has an excellent review of the Out Of The Past movie in his Great Movies section. He also has a nice blurb about Out Of the Past when he slashes and burns the movie 200 Cigarattes.
