Now we are beginning the inexorable grind towards the end of this crazy season where all debts need to be settled at high tide. All the conference pictures become much clearer with each week, yet there is no certainty to any projected outcome. All the conference races are open to multiple teams yet.

In the ACC, the Boston College vs. Clemson game would probably be the clincher. There are no freebies for BC however. Florida State and Maryland loom coming up. The win over Virginia Tech was big-time for the Eagles. Virginia Tech may win out in the Coastal section and face BC again.

The Big East is still wildly up for grabs at this stage with a few key wins here or there. I feel that we must ignite this couch, and give West Virginia the nod. What about a Virginia vs. West Virginia bowl match up? Ay!

Wisconsin still controls its own destiny and could win out with victories over Ohio State and Michigan. Illinois and Purdue need a lot of help at this stage. The Badgers have been a thorn in the side team for the Buckeyes a number of times in the past twenty years. The game is at Ohio State, so we will see if the Buckeyes take full control this week. They certainly held their own against Penn State, and seem somewhat deserving of their number one ranking. The last two times Ohio State had needed to advance to the BCS championship, they pulled out games against Michigan. Those two wins more than anything canonized Jim Tressel to Saint Sweatervest in Columbus.

Kansas gets a shot to OWN Nebraska during a home game at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. That would be a fun game. Nebraska and Iowa State are out of the Big 12 North. Baylor is the only team mathematically eliminated from the Big 12 South yet. Texas Tech could still possibly achieve the Big 12 title game with three more wins, which also requires Baylor to beat Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and Texas Tech and A&M to win out too. OK, it is a long shot, but that is the kind of season we are seeing here. The reality is still pointing between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

The Air Force Falcon cadet team had a major conference deciding loss to New Mexico 31-34. BYU has a lot of football yet to play, with the San Diego State game moved out because of the fires.

UCLA was true to form in giving up a win and lots of yardage to a poor team in the Washington State Cougars. The anti-Dorrellistas are closing in for the kill. His plight does not look so bad now that there were isolated calls for Pete Carrolls head after losing to Stanford and now Oregon. Arizona dropped California out of contention with three losses. Maybe once or twice a decade a two conference loss team has won the conference. Mostly it is a one loss or no loss team. This really only leaves Arizona State and Oregon in the race. UCLA is an also-ran, with a probable 5-4 fifth place finish. The ASU Oregon game is going to happen this week. An ASU win here, plus one over either UCLA or USC probably clinches the deal. An Oregon win continues the sweating and wringing of hands in the conference.

LSU also gets the final test at Alabama this week to see whether they will advance to the SEC championship and possibly the BCS championship. The Rest of the SEC is still in the air too.

Hawaii is the big mid major story this year. Surely once they defeat Boise State, a likely scenario this year, they will advance to a BCS bowl game. What if, say What if, Ohio State and ASU meet in the BCS championship and Hawaii gets invited to the Rose Bowl?

I like Navy over Notre Dame this week. Go Navy.
