One of the computers in our household obtained a drive-by virus infection recently. This particular infection is one of the famous backdoor Trojans that arrive by exploiting browser security from a web site that would otherwise seem harmless. The web site in question already was infected by the server SQL Injection exploit, which was replacing the web pages with ones that framed the content and contained malware JavaScript.
The computer in question was running Windows XP service pack 2, in a non-administrative account, with a 20-day old Symantec Antivirus 7.x virus list.
Why would anyone bother? In this case, the software that was loaded had all sorts of powers. It was malware, spy ware, and blackmail ware all in a blended threat. One piece attempts to open a back door to your computer, so that it can be controlled in a botnet. A botnet can be used to send internet traffic such as denial of service attacks, spam emails, and deliver other content. Another malware program brings in other software that shows up and attempts to blackmail you into buying it so that your computer will continue to work.

Fix your MP3 files for iTunes, iPod, iPhone and get album art |

What do you do if you have a bunch of songs ripped from various sources, and you load them into your iPod or iPhone and now the nifty sorting and album art features are not working? The key is to tag your song files properly. Each song file actually has some text information (an ID3 tag) stored inside the file that tells iTunes what the artist, song title, album name, genre and year are.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
On April Fools day 2008, I attended the traveling launch show for Microsoft Windows 2008, SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio 2008. I already watched the online sessions in the virtual launch at the heroshappenhere.com site, so I had some insight as to what to expect. This show had an improvement over the previous Visual Studio and Windows releases at the Minneapolis Convention center. This time the vendor display was off the main level and moved down to Hall A in the lower level. This kept it much more low key and less like a circus.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a U.S. government agency that was created as part of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush on November 19, 2001. The TSA provides security at airports in the United States. Many columnists are saying what amounts to this:
what the TSA staff is doing is "security theater" or making a big show
while appearing to accomplish very little except collecting huge bins
of personal grooming products.

This NCAA tournament this year has provided very few surprises compared to the 2006 tournament. This is the first year that all my final four picks have made it to the Final Four. This skewers the experts, because all of the grandmas out there have the number one seeds in the Final Four.

UCLA wins 2008 Pacific 10 conference championship and tournament, and is #1 seed |

Over the years, the NCAA has added more games to the college basketball season back from 24, then 26, then 28. In addition, the PAC-10 brought back the conference tournament. The possibility now exists that a team is going to play 32-34 games. A team with twenty wins is no longer a lock for the NCAA tournament. UCLA has won 31 games, a school record for the pre-NCAA tournament. They won both the regular season and tournament.

Fun: Bonerama III: Bringing It Home |
 |
|
|
The third release "Bringing it Home" from the New Orleans trombone group Bonerama, brings more of their Posaune-centric power into your home for your own personal enjoyment. With the first two albums, my favorites have been the arrangements of power rock tunes like Frankenstein, Whipping Post, and Crosstown Traffic. With this album they bring in a great Led Zeppelin classic: Ocean. They return to record live in New Orleans after recording their second album in New York City.

I lost interest in the college football season as soon as the bowl pairings were announced. I wanted to see USC play Ohio State, not USC vs. Illinois and Ohio State vs. LSU. Also, why did Hawaii have to play in the Sugar Bowl? It would seem that the BCS really did set up the bowl pairings so that there would be no threat of controversy. Imagine a one loss Kansas team beating USC or Georgia if Missouri and Oklahoma win out too. Who’s your number one now? The BCS made the perfect pairing in the 2006 Rose Bowl, but otherwise I contend that it is actually worse than the original conference alignments. Bring back the Big Ten/Pac-10 Rose Bowl!

Now that visual Studio 2008 has been released, there is yet another Microsoft .NET framework version 3.5. This builds upon the 3.0 version released earlier, so both parts are installed in separate directories. There are a couple of articles in the Group29.com forums talking about .NET framework and Visual Studio issues, these are consolidated in this article.

This tech tip from the Group29 Tech forums has a large number of hits so it has been bumped to its own article.
Help, I just received an e-mail from an associate with a file I need, but I get the message: "Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments"!
This happens when you are using Outlook XP (2002) or Outlook 2003 and someone sends you a VBS, EXE, CHM, MDB, BAT, or other Level 1 security risk file. (See below for more). Now while a real hassle, there really is no reason someone should send you an exe in an email. So remember that this is a precautionary measure.

To face . . . Hawaii? This is my prediction. The rumors are flying that the Big 10 is pressuring for 13th ranked Illinois at 9-3 and 2nd place to be in the Rose Bowl. Arizona State is ahead at 11. I think neither will be invited. I know this does not play well on the East coast, but on the West coast Hawaii is the best school for the Rose Bowl. The West Coast and Hawaii are closely tied. I pick the undefeated Warriors in the Rose Bowl ahead of Illinois and ASU, as well as Kansas or Missouri. UPDATED

In a season that has turned out to be - dare I say - wild and wooly, USC and UCLA will arrive at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum playing for a berth in the Rose Bowl. USC can get there by winning out. This was the expected outcome, except for the fact that USC was also expected to be in the BCS championship. One unlikely loss to the Stanford Cardinal may prove to be the greatest of upsets for the whole season. It is already in the books as the biggest point spread difference in college football history. UCLA needs to beat USC and hope that Arizona beats Arizona State. Arizona State hopes that UCLA wins and that they beat Arizona. The Oregon Ducks are out of contention. Greg Patton of the Riverside Press -Enterprise calls the Bruins a "daisy in the way of a lawnmower".
