Armageddon [25]
I have high hopes for this film. I like Bruce Willis and think he is one of Hollywood's most underrated actors. Bruce is physically a striking guy. By which I mean, when you look at him you don't usually mistake him for someone else. Despite how recogniseable he is, he still has the ability to convey his characters emotions to the point you almost forget you are watching "Bruce Willis". Unlike "Deep Impact" (see related review), "Armageddon" has a strong supporting cast. Expect lots of cameos! The effects from the trailers I witnessed look to be mind blowing! The basic premise of "Armageddon" is NOT a WWIII nuclear holocaust, rather an asteroid the size of Texas is on a collision course with the earth. It is up to Bruce and his merry band of oil-drilling misfits to become astronauts in 12 days, ride into space on modified space shuttles and place seismic charges inside the asteroid in an attempt to "nudge" this thing a few degrees so its trajectory will miss, and thereby save, the earth. Something this large hitting the earth would destroy ALL life on the planet right down to the microbes and bacteria!
Sounds unlikely doesn't it? WRONG! As recent astrological events have shown us we still don't know a great deal about our solar system. We thought Halley's comet would be spectacular--it fizzled. No one expected comet Hale-Bop to burst on to the scene like a roman candle, but it did--and pretty darn close to the earth astronomically speaking. Halley's comet is on a 75 year orbit. Hale-Bop's orbit is more like what was it? 40,000 years? Any way a long time! What about the Shoemaker-Levy comet that slammed into Jupiter? That came out of nowhere! Surely, there are a lot of fast moving objects out there. I think this movie will examine some of our options should we find something this big coming our way! I really like the in theater promotion card-board cut-out with the electric timer counting down the hours 'til "impact". Very clever. I want one! I think this will be a movie I'll see over and over again. {JB}
