Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (NATALIE PORTMAN) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (HUGO WEAVING) known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.
Natalie Portman really shines in this movie preview, where she really does have "eyes like limpid pools". I am sure one of her ancestors is the subject of the song of Solomon: "thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, " Her character looks like a prisoner or nun with short hair and grey homespun clothes. In fact, she could probably have appeared in the Matrix trilogy, or 1984, or Alien3.
The Agent Smith of Hugo Weaving character was greatly creepy in The Matrix. His character of Elrond was creepily great in The Lord of The Rings. I expect more creepy greatness in V for Vendetta.
This movie is supposed to be "Guy Fawkes lives in 1984". November 5th, 2005 was the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder plot, and also the original release date of the movie. However, the rumor is that the movie was held off due to unrest about the terrorist bombings in London in the summer of 2005.
In the preview trailer, the Houses of Parliament are destroyed in an explosion, with the clock tower face exploding dramatically outward. This Palace of Westminster was the original target of the Gunpowder plot. However, the explosives were in the cellar, not in the clock tower. The aim was to kill the members of parliament. In the movie, the palace is supposed to be abandoned. Also, it would seem that in the dystopian facist future, the Houses of Parliament would be seen as a symbol of the good old days of the British Empire/Commonwealth/United Kingdom. Then the target of V likely should have been the new stronghold of the facist government. So it would seem by symbolism that the current UK Government are the facists and the movie writers side with IRA and Al Queada terrorists.
I will plan to rent this. {BB}
