    This is a huge annoyance. If you frequently use a USB hard drive, Pen drive, thumb drive, or memory stick, you will find that the autoplay feature will start searching for a suitable application to run the files on your storage device. A lot of time gets chewed up as Windows looks at all the files stored on the drive. This happens with home made CD/Roms and DVD/Roms too. Here is a handy tip that will help. Create a file called "Autorun.inf" to place in the top (root) directory of your storage device or CD/DVD. You can do this by using notepad or any other text editor.

    Add these two lines:
    Code:
    [autorun]
    open=explorer.exe

    This will make the windows explorer be the default application to pop open when the drive is plugged in or disc is inserted. You could use an MP3 player or picture viewer application too. The program has to be in the path of your computer, or stored on the drive/disk itself.

    If you want to give it a cool icon in Windows explorer, add another line. In this example, I have an icon file named ion.ico that I have copied to the top directory on the USB drive:
    Code:
    [autorun]
    open=explorer.exe
    icon=ion.ico

    You can find all sorts of cool icons by downloading the favicon.ico from your favorite web site. In this example, I downloaded the favicon.ico from the iogear.com web site to place on my USB drive of that brand.
