    Captain Marvel [25]

    Movie Reviews

    As I mention in the Expectation review for Captain Marvel, I have been eager to see this movie since the closing moments of Avengers Infinity War, when Nick Fury activates his crazy pager right before he is decimated. The Captain Marvel logo appears to a final major chord signifying there is hope yet for the universe following The Snap. The logo is the new Captain Marvel color scheme that Carol selects instead of the Kree star force green and black.

    The movie did not disappoint. I wanted to shout, "Zip it Stan Lee!" at the opening credits. It was a touching tribute.

    Lee Pace was present to reprise his role as Ronan the Accuser. His acting notes consisted of, "You know the super brooding teenage boy thing you had going in Guardians of the Galaxy?" "Yea?!?" "Double Down on that!" He does not really add much except that he gets a callback. "Hey! That is Ronan the Accuser!"

    Brie Larson does a great job as Carol Danvers. I do not know what all those troll boys were crying about, she was fantastic. She has joined the litany of my girlfriends. That is the joke from when my wife started teasing me, "The movie with your *GIRLFRIEND* is on." I decided to own it, and go with the Mark Wahlberg style monologue:
    Julie Roberts?
    Gwyneth Paltrow?
    Sandra Bullock?
    Nicole Kidman?
    Emily Blunt?
    Anne Hathaway?
    Emma Stone?
    Natalie Portman?
    Daisy Ridley?
    Margot Robbie?
    And so on

    I think we are going to find out soon that a Nippon Sharyo P865 Blue Line train set was specially restored for the filming. That is what the blue line train looked like in the 90s. Of all the places in LA Carol Danvers could have crash landed, it happened to be conveniently located next to the only rail mass transit in the city and newly built! There is a twist in this movie, the heroes are the villains and the villains are the heroes? I did not see that coming. Move over M. Night Shyamalan.

    The mid-credits scene is the major payoff, YES! Carol is already at Avengers headquarters at the start of Avengers Endgame in seven weeks. That pager really worked. Too bad for Nick, but somehow things must work out in his favor if he appears in the next Spiderman movie. UNLESS we find out at the end that Spiderman Far From home actually takes place right before the events of Infinity War.

    The post-credits scene also pays off nicely. The Tesseract, the cosmic cube containing the space infinity stone, a prop for five previous MCU films, and the major Macguffin, is actually a Flerken hairball. [Eew]. There might be some actual cat spit still on it when Nick Fury gives the Tesseract to Erik Selvig to study. I knew that if a cat swallowed it, that he was going to have to roop it up somehow. Fury and Goose seem to be good friends, despite the fact that a Flerken scratch is how he lost the use of his left eye. The Tesseract / Space Stone also turns out to be the source of power for Carol Danvers to turn into Captain Marvel. This makes me wonder how things are going to turn out for the Infinity stones. Are they done for and cooked? I am not quite sure if Captain Marvel is ever named as such in the movie. I am primed now for Avengers Endgame. {BB}

    Update November 2022, this is the most popular review on the site, even more than the Star Wars Empire of Dreams review that went "semi-viral" after linking from the Star Wars fan site. I had an early copy of that one. {BB}
