    Men in Black [25]

    Movie Reviews

If it's Independence Day, then it's time for another Will Smith movie. Men in Black is a lighter look at the flip side of the television series, the X Files. The premise of the movie is that we cannot stop aliens from visiting the earth, so we need some form of intergalactic Immigration and Naturalization Service to monitor their activities. Since we humans are such an immature species, we cannot know about the aliens living among us. The implication is that many of our overachievers are aliens.

The senior Man in Black, recognizes a special talent in Jay, the New York Police detective he recruits recommends for the super secret agency. Their mission is to locate a special item before an unwelcome alien finds it, or the earth will be destroyed by the approaching alien ship. Their chase takes them after a large cockroach disguised as a human. I don't want to give away the plot or ruin the movie for anyone, but they leave everything open for several sequels. This movie doesn't attempt to take itself seriously so it becomes a light hearted comedy built around a simple plot.

Will Smith is excellent as the young and innocent trainee with his flippant remarks and expressions. Tommy Lee Jones is great as the serious senior agent who's seen it all, and takes it all in stride. Even the aliens have diverse and distinct personalities that reflect our society enough that I suspect I may have worked for them at one time. I strongly recommend this movie to anyone who want's to escape from reality for a couple of hours of lighthearted enjoyment. (KC)
