Florida, Ohio State, UCLA and Georgetown in 2007 Final Four
|
|
|
Two teams from last year are back: UCLA and Florida; and they will
face each other in the second game of the evening on the Saturday semi-finals. Ohio State
and Georgetown
are in the other two semi-final slots. There are no surprises in this final
four. Ohio State
and Florida
are #1 seeds. Florida is the defending
national champion; Ohio
State is the #1 ranked
team. Georgetown
and UCLA were both picked by a number of prognosticators to be in the final
four as well. UCLA spent some time ranked #1, along with Florida this year. These teams all hovered
in the top 10 during the season.
See last year's article Group29 - LSU, UCLA, Florida and George Mason in 2006 Final Four
All of the teams in the final four are powerhouses, not only this season, but also overall. Each has at least one national title. Ohio State has gone the longest without winning it all, and Florida won it all last year with virtually the same team.

UCLA lost to Florida in the title game. Florida has already dispatched the Oregon Ducks, the PAC-10 tournament champions and one of the few teams to beat UCLA this season. The other game between UCLA and Oregon was a close win for the Bruins at home. UCLA defeated Kansas, and the Jayhawks were one of the few teams to beat the Florida Gators this season. It looks like a high ratings match up. UCLA rode the crowd in San Jose to the final, just like last year when they stayed in California.
Ohio State has squeaked out a few games, and they lost to Florida. A Florida / Ohio State basketball championship would mirror the football BCS championship played just a few months earlier. It is quite a storyline.
Georgetown held up the Big East, and disrespected the ACC, who got seven bids this year after only four last year. North Carolina was shut out of the final four. Roy Williams looked like he could not understand what was happening on the court. Lucky for him he has a ring on his finger already from two years ago. The other Big Ten teams exited early, including #2 seed Wisconsin. The ACC teams also struggled. The top four teams in the PAC-10 looked good. USC played strong against North Carolina. The Daily Trojan was already wishing for a UCLA-USC match up in the title game. Clearly, Jim Nantz and Billy Packer do not read their media handouts. The basketball media guide and every media handout from the University of Southern California tell what terms can be used to refer to the teams, and Southern Cal is not among them. Washington State missed some key free throws that would have put away a strong Vanderbilt team. Oregon did make Florida work for its supper.
Last year I predicted a UCLA/Florida final. This year, I see a Florida/Georgetown final. Georgetown is going to finally shut down Ohio State, who sure looked confused against Tennessee. The Buckeyes struggled against Xavier too, but pulled ahead in overtime. Gus Johnson had a wild call at the end of that game. But nothing can top the UCLA vs Gonzaga Game 2006 - Gus Johnson and Len Elmore with the call
