UCLA wins 2008 Pacific 10 conference championship and tournament, and is #1 seed

Over the years, the NCAA has added more games to the college basketball season back from 24, then 26, then 28. In addition, the PAC-10 brought back the conference tournament. The possibility now exists that a team is going to play 32-34 games. A team with twenty wins is no longer a lock for the NCAA tournament. UCLA has won 31 games, a school record for the pre-NCAA tournament. They won both the regular season and tournament.
Of course, there were some hiccups along the way. They lost to Texas
61-63. That was a bit surprising since it was at Pauley Pavilion.
However, it was the worst performance for Kevin Love during the whole
season. He had 24 minutes with 11 points and five rebounds. The Bruins
just could not take care of the ball and turned it over on steals. That
one loss most likely cost them the wire service poll national
championship, as teams with fewer losses blocked them out. The
Washington loss was a bad one. Clearly, when the Bruins do not have Luc
Richard Mbah a Moute, they are without a major presence. With Kevin
Love having back spasms and Mbah a Moute with a sprained ankle, the
road to the final four looks tough. Kevin Love is the key to the Bruins
top flight success. Without him, they are a mid conference and mid NCAA
team. I give him outright credit for making the difference in about 10
of the Bruin wins.
The Bruins open as a number one seed and placement in the Honda Center
in Anaheim. Their first opponent is the Mississippi Valley State Delta
Devils.
The PAC-10 placed four strong teams into the NCAA field: UCLA,
Stanford, Washington State and USC. The also got in Arizona and Oregon,
both of whom are suspect to lose in the opening round. I expect the top
four all to reach the elite eight. At that point USC runs up against
Kansas, Stanford runs up against Texas in Houston, and Washington State
runs up against North Carolina in Charlotte. UCLA is the only one that
will make it to the final four. I see tough games ahead for UCLA
starting with Texas A&M, Drake, and Duke.
