The 2010 Rose Bowl broadcast

The 2010 Rose Bowl deserved some serious consideration. The game featured an Oregon team that totally went off the rails. They had a new coach in Chip Kelly, and in their first game, lost to an opponent that they should not have in Boise State. Then LaGarrette Blount did a really stupid thing in going nuts and going after Byron Hout. With the video making the rounds on every sports show and the internet, as the Boise State game was the first of the season, it looked like Oregon had a major team meltdown on their hands.
The Oregon Ducks then had a miraculous comeback, and their season floated the Boise State Broncos season as well. Every Duck win was actually two for the BCS. Sportswriters drooled over the possibility of sticking it to the BCS with Boise State again. Ohio State on the other hand lost their Game of the Century to a merely “good” USC team. I looked for Coach Sweatervest to make a brilliant showing with his team in the Rose Bowl, but not enough to beat Boise State, I mean Oregon. Which is what I am implying here is that Boise State really is that good, because they won their one important game. Really... As their reward, the Boise State Broncos would get to face another team whose measure really has not been taken in Texas Christian. This “top Ten” matchup is really the crap bowl of the season. The Fiesta Bowl brokered the whole BCS and then they get stuck with this? The BCS sticks it to the sportswriters in putting two mid major teams in the same bowl, so that they have no shot at the big guys. Perfect. I hope the Rose Bowl NEVER sees this horrible arrangement.
The actual Rose Bowl broadcast on ABC seemed to get an extra hour this year. We had a countdown, there were highlights of the season for both teams, we saw the rose queen and her court, and both bands had screen time. Except for those in the KSTP Minneapolis area, where the short news segment at halftime stepped on the Ohio State band show. Each band and school is entitled to a conference ad, school ad, and marching band during halftime. These are things that make the Rose Bowl telecast special. Last year, Channel 5 KSTP stepped on the PAC-10 advertisement. Overall, just magnificent, and even Brent Musberger was bearable as he starts slipping into senility. It almost seemed like a farewell to the Rose Bowl we know and love.
Both Ohio State and Oregon appeared fast. These are two of the speediest teams I ever have seen in the Rose Bowl. Oregon seemed to go with the all of their plays having a start position with either a handoff or fake handoff telegraphed for miles. But their offensive line seemed strong enough to keep the Buckeyes at bay. Terrell Pryor showed how big and tough he is by stiff arming and shoving at least three tacklers to the ground. The game changing play was Blount mishandling and fumbling the ball at the Buckeyes 18 yard line, trailing only by 2 at that point in the game.
Oregon will be back, and so will Ohio State. Perhaps they face each other in the National Championship next year, which will leave the Rose Bowl with Utah vs. Texas Tech in front of a 3/4 full stadium. Boo Hiss.
Boise State has nothing left to prop up their season, the jury is out on whether they could have beat Ohio State, which they really could have done if, well, Oregon did it. Really. On to the 2010 BCS 1 vs. 2 game. Wow, great matchup. Great teams. Marquee programs. Either could win. At this point, I am picking Alabama. I think it might be by ten or more ultimately, but will be a lot closer than that during the game. Now we find out if pure football for the national championship without the New Years day pageantry is really all that much better. I say no, I would rather be Oregon and Ohio State kicking off at 1:30 PST in the afternoon on a National Holiday instead of Texas and Alabama kicking off on Thursday (school) night. What a rip-off for Texas and Alabama, no Tournament of national champions parade! No beautiful California Winter day that causes people from the Midwest to pack their cars and leave the snow! It might as well be played in a domed stadium. That is right, bring the BCS here to Minneapolis!
Finally, poor Sugar bowl, this was the consolation game to the BCS. Even the coaches wont be at this game. What a mess. And the 51-24 final score indicates to me that Cincinnati was not really all that without a head coach. I could not even bear to watch. As I wrote a few years ago, Notre Dame fans already were fed up with Charlie Weis. It still is not apparent why they stuck with him so long. We will see how they fare with Brian Kelly. Best quote of the year: “Steve Sarkasian was able to do something that Charlie Weis could not do, beat USC with Tyrone Willinghams players. “
