Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince to be released July 16th, 2005
    Our favorite stories and authors
On July 16th, 2005 the sixth installment in the Harry Potter book series, Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling, is due to be available at bookstores worldwide. Based upon the flurry of activity surrounding the release of Book four (Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire) and Book five (Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix) there will be a large amount of media coverage.

In the fifth and most recent book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the last chapter, titled "The Second War Begins," started: 'In a brief statement Friday night, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge confirmed that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has returned to this country and is active once more. "It is with great regret that I must confirm that the wizard styling himself Lord — well, you know who I mean - is alive among us again," said Fudge.'

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes up the story of Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at this point in the midst of the storm of this battle of good and evil.

Book retailers have been offering pre-sales for several months. Toy R Us has even gone so far as to post a sign on their cash registers saying they will give a free soda to any customer who has not been offered a pre-sale. I have gotten one soda so far. There will be midnight Harry Potter book parties with costumed children and adults. Some religious group members, most of whom have never read a single passage of the book, will protest. I will purchase a copy of the hardcover edition and read it as soon as I can.

    J. K. Rowling announced in the title confirmation message that the Half-Blood Prince referred to in the book's title is neither Harry, nor Voldemort the evil wizard. As Rowling is notorious for playing with words, some even suggested Tom Riddle (young Voldemort who appeared in the magical diary) was a candidate, arguing that he has already been referred to separately from "Voldemort" in the books. However, this was dispelled by Rowling. Harry would seem to be a “mudblood”, but not necessarily a half blood in that his mother Lily’s parents were non-magical “muggles”. The family history of Harry’s father James is unknown. Although, both of Harry’s parents are Wizards. Voldemort might translate as “Flight of Death” (vol de la mort) or “Thief of Death” (voleur de la mort). My personal take is that it the character has an overwhelming Fear of Death (effroi de la mort).

The theme of "Wizarding Blood purity" seems to refer to the class system that is a feature of British society, particularly within educational institutions such as universities or public schools similar in nature to Harry's school, Hogwarts. Harry would be a middle class, Malfoy is moneyed upper class, Ron is upper class by birth, but without money. Hermione is lower class.

There has been wide speculation about the identity of the half blood character, with suggested names including every male character of any significance whatsoever in the books. Another rumor is that the Half-Blood Prince is Felix Felicis, one of the chapter titles that Rowling announced on her website. The character Mark Evans—mentioned briefly at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix—had also been suggested, largely because Lily Potter's maiden name was "Evans" and fans could not believe that his name could be a coincidence. (Harry accuses Dudley Dursley of “doing” or beating up Mark Evans with his gang.) Rowling responded to this on her website by saying his name is simply a coincidence and he will not play a significant part in the story. Following her appearance at the Edinburgh Book Festival it was reported on Mugglenet that Rowling revealed to two separate attendees that Hagrid is not the HBP.

This fall we should be seeing Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire in Theaters.

Many B&N stores are receiving 4 times as many copies as are reserved, and the number of reserved copies per store is freakin' huge. Keep in mind some stores are getting considerably more than just 4 times as many. When the book goes on sale at midnight, stores will be in the midst of a whole Harry Potter festival of sorts - games and activies based on the books, other areas of the stores (music) will be closed, etc etc. The book is going at 40% off, and it's expected to sell out almost instantly regardless of the seemingly obscene number of books being shipped. We're talking multicolored wristbands designate lines that stretch outside of stores, fire marshall occupancy limits (which doesn't happen too often in the bookstore world), and full staffs working into the wee hours of the morning and starting again the next day.. The release of this book is as big as Star Wars, and I don't say that jokingly.
