2005 NCAA Basketball broadcasts in HDTV

This is very cool for NCAA basketball fanatics. The local CBS affiliate is carrying two separate feeds of the NCAA men�s basketball championship during the first and second rounds when multiple games are played. On the regular VHF analog broadcast, they are showing the normal regional games they would have been assigned. In our region, preference is given to games involving Big Ten or Midwestern schools whenever possible. On their HDTV band, they are showing a second different game, in HDTV when possible.
On Thursday March 17th, the Tucson regional games were broadcast in High Definition Television. I was able to catch the UCLA/Texas Tech game in HDTV instead of the Illinois/Fairleigh Dickinson game. That game and others from Indianapolis were broadcast in normal analog.
In case you are interested, The Red Raiders ran roughshod all over the freshmen Bruins 78-66, and the Knights put some fear into the #1 Illini, but lost 67-55. Today, the games from Worcester, Mass will also be broadcast in HDTV. The local CBS affiliate will carry these on the HDTV band, while their regularly selected regional games (like those from Charlotte, NC) will be carried on the analog VHF band.
It felt really cool to be able to see two different games at the same time. It was as if I had subscribed to an exclusive cable package or was a network insider. When they showed games from other regions on the HDTV band, the display had blue CBS bars on either side of the screen. I was also able to run "Twin Picture" on my Sharp Aquos (Read the Review of that LC-32GD6U LCD TV here) and watch the video of two different games at the same time! Now THAT is cool.

Harris Corporation is sponsoring the HDTV broadcasts in select regions. All of the regional finals, and the semi-finals and championship game will be broadcast in HDTV.

The Friday night lineup on HDTV was even better. The regular broadcast on the Analog NTSC CBS affiliate was the Northern Iowa/Wisconsin game. It was a very good game. However the game of the night was the Syracuse/Vermont game on the HDTV channel. Both games came down to the last basket. And interestingly enough, both games concluded at the exact same time. CBS tried to give those viewers of the Panther/Badger game a quick look at the upset in progress.
I had much better luck with the twin picture feature of my TV and the dual broadcast. I was able to see both games. With only analog TV, I would have been stuck on only one game. I never even would have seen the Vermont game.
The Vermont upset of Syracuse busted my bracket as I had the Orangemen going to the round of eight (defeating Duke!). But it is easily the most talked about game of the night. Even more so than the Kansas Jayhawks being STUNNED by Bucknell. The New York media this morning was all abuzz of the event in Worcester. I suspect there are a few Catamount alumni in the New York City area.

2005 NCAA Basketball broadcasts in HDTV - Regional Finals/Sweet 16 games (Score: 1)

(User Info ) http://www.group29.com | The first night of sweet 16 games were all in HDTV. It was interesting to watch CBS switch between wide screen and 4:3 on the stadium shots before going to the at the half show. Also, certain cameras must be regular cameras, because after games were over, the floor cameras were in 4:3. I suspect it was a mixed set of equipment to tape the shows. It would be almost like switching between color and black and white on different cameras.
Sound Problems?
Dick Enberg's voice could barely be heard on the HDTV band during the first Chicago game (Illinois vs UWM). The microphones attached to the backboards were working fine, but his voice was not mixed right in the HDTV broadcast. I could hear him fine on the analog broadcast. I do not know if this was a local affiliate problem or a CBS problem. It was corrected for the second Chicago game (AZ vs OK State). The sound from the Albuquerque games was just fine.
I had Louisville defeating Washington in my bracket. I predict they will be in the final four. My bracket had them defeating Wake Forest to get there. I had picked Oklahoma State to beat Arizona. And then I have Illinois advancing to the final four. My eastern half brackets are going to be completely busted if UNC loses to Villanova. I had Uconn beating UNC in my final four. Illinois beats Louisville and then Uconn to win the National Championship. We'll see. |

(User Info ) http://www.group29.com | | The final four are finally ready for St. Louis. The Illinois Fighting Illini will play The Louisville Cardinals in one semifinal. The Michigan State Spartans will play the North Carolina Tarheels in another semifinal. The Regional championship games were all close. Wisconsin remained within 3 points up until the end of their game with UNC. The Arizona/Illinois and Louisville/West Virgina games both went into overtime. Michigan State outlasted Kentucky in Double Overtime. HDTV coverage for all 4 games was done well. They must have worked out the sound bugs. I am looking forward to the Final Four in HDTV next week. |

2005 NCAA HDTV Final Four (Score: 1)

(User Info ) http://www.group29.com | I saw two great games. Illinois just put the hammer down on Louisville. Michigan State looked like they could dominate, but North Carolina got serious in the second half. Everyone will talk about being one 3 point shot away from an undefeated season. Every champion faces that team that just will not go away. I would not want to be on a Buckeye squad traveling to Champaign next year.
Now we have the most satisfactory matchup of all, #1 Illinois vs. #2 North Carolina. It should draw a large audience.
Louisville fans can just put a sock in it about their seeding. The Cardinals beat the #1 seed Washington and then advanced to get a shot at the best team in the land. They lost. A better seeding would not have helped them at all. In fact, it is difficult for me to see how anyone in the first four seeds is at a disadvantage. A 4-13 game should be as winnable as a 1-16 game. If you cannot beat a 13, you certainly did not deserve to draw a 16. Maybe if Arizona had been the #1 seed (If they won the PAC-10 championship), then we might have seen the Arizona - Illinois matchup in the Final Four. Suppose Louisville and Washington exchange seeds. Then Louisville draws Montana and Pacific. Washington gets Louisiana Lafayette and then Georgia Tech. You would still project they would play each other. So why gripe about seeding? Just win.
I am looking forward to the game tonight. I still predict Illinois the winner after a tough battle. |

UNC #1 National Champions 2005 + Star Wars Trailer! (Score: 1)

(User Info ) http://www.group29.com | The University Of North Carolina Tarheels defeated the University of Illinois Fighting Illini 75-70 to win the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Both teams ended up in foul trouble, but Illinois even more so. James Augustine, Junior Forward for the Illini Fouled out with 7 minutes to play and NO POINTS. Sean May, the Tarheels junior Center delivered some powerful shots inside and could not be stopped. Illinois had a furious rally in the second half to chew up a 15 point deficit. But North Carolina was able to hold the momentum and bring home a championship for Roy Williams.
Jim Nantz and Billy Packer rooted for both sides and did a great job for CBS. The HDTV broadcast was clear and crisp. I never want to watch basketball in regular NTSC broadcasts again! Way to go CBS in bringing us this game and many others along the way in HDTV. I anticipate that next year, all the games will be in 1080 HDTV from all venues. HDTV is as big a jump as color was before.
I did not see my new favorite Diet Coke with Lime commercial [www.group29.com]. But I did get to see a new trailer for Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith [www.group29.com] in HDTV. Very Cool!

The Imperial march plays during the clip. We see lots of dark side action like Anakin with his clone troopers, and Darth Sidious swinging a lightsabre.
